I'd think that it also depends on your pockets. i.e. If you have pockets like on a Nudie, it'll be worse than on something like a repro with the "cowboy" pocket placement, which makes the wallet not right under you.

I wear my nudies low so my wallet is under my right thigh...not really close to my butt and I use a rather slim marc jacobs zip up wallet so I can't imagine it do much to my back. A point though is that I recently visited the chiropractor and he stated that I had minor scoliosis, but not from bone deformation, but rather an imbalance in the muscles in my back with the muscles on my right side (where i wear my wallet) stronger then on the left side and the muscles pushing my spine to my left side. He said it wasn't that big of a deal and that a few back exercises should straighten me out. So visit the chiropractor and see whats uppp.

it may also only apply to tighter jeans
like if the wallet isnt mad tight against your leg/butt why would it affect you
and its not that big of a deal
because of snowboarding 5% more of my body mass is on my right side then my left

I also go the chiropractor mostly for neck problems and we started talking about it one day and said people have came in and complained about maybe thier wallet might be the cause of thier back pain but he didn't think it would have that dramatic of an effect. Sometimes I notice my buttocks muscle will go kind of numb were I wear my wallet if I'm driving my car for a long period of time. I never have been really worried about though.

My wallets corners made did some damage to my right butt pocket. I keep my cell phone there now, but it feels like it will fall out sometimes. But I don't think it can cause any physical damage to your body. Unless you're sitting on a brick sized wallet.

after some quick googling, i found this: http://www.balanceinthebody.com/wallet.htm

i've been wearing a average-thick wallet in my back pocket for many years now, and it's never bothered me--until i started wearing nudies. specifically, when i wear my wallet (and cell phone) in my back pockets (of my even stevens, no less), i get VERY uncomfortable after long periods of time sitting down. it's actually become a habit of mine recently to take my cellphone/wallet out when i'm in class or at the movies, etc.

i'll continue scouring google to see if there's anything else i can find on this. :-?

Yeah, I like my wallets too. About 3 years ago, I started this habit of holding my wallet and cell phone or keeping it in my bag. It started mainly because I faced difficulty getting my wallet or cell phone out of the back pocket. So no matter what bottom I wear, tight or baggy, I don't put my wallet in my back pocket anymore (unless I need to visit the washroom). Now that it became a habit, there is no object fades besides my keys.

Despite having made my own wallets (and liking them), I decided that I hate wallet fades, so now I have two money clips. One in the shirt-pocket or vest, the other in my bag since it's the other cards and cash which I rarely ever use. Pretty much since getting into raw denim, I've given up carrying anything but a few coins in my pants pockets.

When I sit, my wallet is almost sticking out, so I am sitting flat. I can imagine if it's directly under your ass - it will cause alignment issues in the long term

But consider this ; when you are sleep on your sides - you're putting pressure on your spine.
When you are sleeping on your back, you are still putting pressure on your spine..unless you get one of those leg things to elevate your leg. But I think the main issue is people who seriously sit egornomically incorrect - the wallet is thick enough to cause pressure disalignment in your discs...long enough and you have damage...

oh no, i guess i'm screwed. In my opinion, i think we have some much more serious posture problems to worry about than a 3/4" thick wallet. (i.e. kids slumped over playing video games 6-7 hours a day)

I thought about it and asked my friends at the gym. If you look at it this way, when you do weights with improper form, even the slightest will hurt your lower back. When you go to sleep and lay straight or wake up the next day, you will feel it for sure.

However, I have used a wallet in my right backpocket for the past 6 years, all my jeans (prewash or raw) have a wallet fade. I've never experienced any pain...but then again maybe it's one of those long term things.

Honestly it probably poses no threat, when you sleep and lay on your back - you still cause pressure to build on certain parts of your back - But I am paranoid and so I have stopped using my wallet in my back pocket when sitting (I take it out when I sit down, put it back when I walk/etc).

Not to mention..come to think of it..wallet fades suck -_-
