    chainstitching = who gives a f

I suppose the lack of a proper chainstitcher in Sydney is indicative of the lack of interest in quality jeans here (much like well made shoes. Try and find anyone who stocks John Lobb in Australia). Almost every denim shop in Japan has a chainstitcher, I try and get most of my jeans hemmed before shipping when I buy from Rakuten. For the jeans I already have in my collection that I didn't hem on purchase, I just go to my local tailor and get it done on a lockstitch for about $20.

on the few occasions i've shortened my jeans, i've just left it exposed with no stitching at all. that pretty much sums up my attitude to it.

although- i think i recall seeing on rakuten that 2nd does it free when you purchase? is that true? for overseas purchasers as well, or is it like the 'free shipping' blurbs that are directed more at japanese customers?

Hey Kiyo. i myself have found frustration getting jeans chainstitched in sydney, so i decided to buy my own machine and do it myself. Within the next coming weeks i'll be providing a chainstitch hem service in sydney. I'm actually in the process of handcrafting jeans as i am a fashion design student and have managed to get a hold of a Union Special 56400. (unfortunetly not a 43200G bulldog but hoping for one in the future.. still looking)

I've purchased a few handmade double fold hem attachments which i should receive soon. I'm pretty much limited in terms of thread colours as i still have to source some. At the moment i am using Coats Dual Duty Plus. Its a poly core wrapped in cotton made for denim jean use, for strength and fade abilities.

here is a pic of the machine
    [IMG]

the machine is actually meant for double lap felled seams on jeans, but i've taken one needle off to do the hems. therefore this is actually meant for heavier fabrics which should be no problems for hems.

as mentioned in an earlier post it is a flat bed so i will have to look at working the hem from an unconventional method. but i'll post pics up when i get the first couple of hems done.

yeah, even if i'm not a big fan of alterations, i'd probably come around to the idea chain-stitching if there was someone nearby. keep us posted.

ok well the folder i got wasn't heavy duty enough so i might get another made. i found a guy in melbourne that might be able to do it.

i did manage to get some hems done by pre folding one fold and then using the lap seam folder i already had to roll it down. here's what it looks like

    [IMG][IMG]

this is a pic of the original hem

and the two together with the thread i'm using
    [IMG]

i still need to tweak the stitch length and tension but it's close. the only problem using the lap seam folder is the thickness of the inseam rolled together and not fitting. the machine itself has no problems sewing through the seams.

this fabric feels like a 14 - 16 oz denim.. i was given all the off cuts in the americaya store in ueno when i visited after my friend told them how obsessed i was haha. they were all nice there, and they know their denim like anything.

hopefully the next folder is better, will let you know how all that goes.

no worries, i was planning on keeping them anyway. i just thought i'd put that out there anyway- how much do they retail for here anyway?

i just had a quick look for you on all the online retailers, but it would seem you're shit outta luck worldwide on a 32 inseam. except on rakuten, where it looks like there's a whole bunch, but i'd feel like a dick buying nudie on rakuten  would be about the same price as australian retail tho, and it'd probably get here more quickly than interstate would...

^ his best bet would've been buying overseas, i reckon- nudie is overpriced here. @ nightrain, for 265 your best bet is to buy from rakuten, i've just seen plenty on there.
