Moving towards the Town Hall, The original Town Hall buildings were designed by Melbourne architects Reed & Barnes. The foundation stone was laid in 1867 by Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, son of Queen Victoria, and the building opened on 9 August 1870.
The present hall was constructed, in art-deco style, between 1926 and 1927 to the designs of Melbourne architects Stephenson & Meldrum, following the destruction of the original auditorium by fire in 1925. The largest civic hall in the country in cubic area, it is much wider than its predecessor, an additional allotment to the north being taken over for the purpose. The interior was redecorated in the original muted paint colours in the 1990s.

since im in the area, ill bring the tour to some more alleys that i love, The Burke and Wills Monument was Melbourne’s first public monument and commemorates the Victorian Exploring Expedition of 1860-61. Under the leadership of Robert O’Hara Burke and his second in command, William John Wills. The monument was designed and cast at Summers’ Collins Street studio. The figure of Burke was first cast in two pieces, but Summers was not satisfied with the result and decided to recast it in one, which he did successfully in the presence of a crowd of 130 people on 1 February 1865.

^tnx, 5! the MEL tour will be helpful when i drop by for a few days enroute to AUK in Nov. i've been to SYD & i see some similarities. a friend told me that SYD is to Los Angeles, CA, as MEL is to Orange County__ which basically meant that maybe it's smaller in size & population, but [proportionally] more substantial and vibrant__ with its interesting arts & culture, thriving busines center, and replete in gastronomic adventures.

IIrd icon, you're essentially right with the sydney/melbourne paradigm, although i dunno about the OC thing- sydney has a significantly different (read better) climate than melbourne, so things tend to be skewed more towards the outdoors and natural beauties than towards the culturally inclined, which is more melbourne's forte.

unfortunately, newcastle (where i live) is very much like the new jersey in that paradigm :p
