They don't have to be stiff in order to fade. Just as an example, you can get the softest pre-wash out there, and still end up with a wallet fade in the back pocket (as I'm sure you can see on just about anyone out there wearing jeans).

 I'm used to wearing shorts and T's 11 months out of the year (live in Fla) so I rarely am wearing something that's gym-inappropriate and usually don't even consider changing before I go to the gym. The idea of squatting in my jeans is something I got from this guy, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I'll probably try a lot of things on these jeans and see what happens. I'm taking an experimental approach to these jeans.

Sorry man. I had to finally cap it.

This thread has been around forever and nobody showed any interest until the very end.

People had months to decide, and I even extended the deadline for 15 days.

I'm not in the contest but I have a question, to get the skinny fit like rayzor has, would I get them at the same size I would for a normal pair of 501's or bigger size or smaller?

Because this guy http://1isa2isb.com/501_shrink_to_fit/ says to get them a size bigger while I read people on here say they got them a size smaller and they have good fits?

Oh, and hi I'm new to the forum. :)

Welcome to the forum! If you're going for a slim fit, you can get them true to size in the waist. While they will shrink, they'll stretch back out in fairly short order. Or you can wear them in the tub to shrink them, and not have to worry about them getting too small.

Buy the tightest ones possible , then shower or take a bath. this keeps the waist from shrinking. the waist will stretch a after a few wears.

I'm not in the contest but I'm thinking about following along as well =P

I tried a pair on but the rise just killed it for me and the whole thing was just so baggy. I like some of the fits posted though.

The rise goes away after you shrink the crap out of them. When you first put it on the rise is killer. I almost freaked out a bit b/c the fly was like the Empire State building but after they came out the hot/hot machine w/ no soap and 3hr hot soak, it didn't feel anywhere near as long. I think they measure 13" from top of waist to bottom of crotch from backside of pant after shrinking.

Also the method I posted earlier in the thread does not need a dryer involved at all. 2-3 hour hot soak followed with hot/warm cycle in machine with no soap does all the shrinking you need. You do not even need to run the washer on full cycle. I used something called quick wash and it lasted for 29m.

The rise takes a bit of getting used to. When I tried a pair on in the store, they only had 30x32 as the closest to my size and they didn't look great, definitely too loose in the wrong places. I was able to order what seems like the right size, 29x36 and they have the fit I was hoping for. Also keep in mind that when/ if you soak them, they will shrink up to fit better.

I know that stiffness doesn't impact the actual fades, but how quickly does unwashed denim fade versus washed denim?

i'm not in this contest but i picked up some 1947 501xx when i saw they were on sale for $80. i did a warm soak and they shrunk perfect. This is my second wear in them and just curious how much they will stretch back now. I've been wearing apc's and i know those stretch like crazy.
