Hey guys, I'm new here and crazy for jeans, especially for those nice cut and original colors, such as APC's NS and some of Nudie's, I think I do like the type of RRDS mostly since it wears really comfortable and nice :)

oops.. in my thoughts that nowadays the young people in SG are not expert at writing Chinese characters but they might be speaking very good.

It's not the same tones but the same spelling, and the meaning of " 捷捷" is sensitive )

No good, most of the Chinese here couldn't write Chinese characters (at least those I know of, also, including me). But most of us can speak mandarin, though not perfect mandarin as we tend to include in some english, hokkien, malay words in it. So the beauty of Chinese language is pretty much lost in Singapore.

That's right and regretable... Why most of the Chinese here could't write Chinese characters? I think they just did not use it since the people here are tend to use english, it's easy for communicating with almost everyone, even for the people who are not engllish speaker, just like me.

actually, I really admire that most people in your side can speak several languages, such as 潮州话&马来语&英语, etc. and I'm trying to learn some of languages, but I always give it up due to without a well spoken condition&time, you know it is hard by self-study.

I'm glad to be here as 你是我在这里第一个认识的朋友, 谢谢。

"Why most of the Chinese here could't write Chinese characters?", I feel that it's a pity till a point of disgrace about this. Anyway, I am tracing back my roots now, trying to complete my studies, make some money, and probably stay in 福州 (that's where my ancestors are from) to understand more about its history and culture. Unfortunately for me and a couple of my friends from the same dialect group, we couldn't speak our dialect but could speak dialects from 福建 and 潮州.

"people in your side can speak several languages, such as 潮州话&马来语&英语, etc.", Another problem with Singaporean Chinese face is that they could speak English better and when the Chinese from China come to Singapore. The Singaporean Chinese tend to make fun of the Chinese accent from China (although that's exactly how Mandarin should sound like) as it sounds different from our accent. The Chinese culture, history and language is losing its beauty in Singapore and I hope the future generation could learn it and appreciate it.

    thanks for the details.

cheer up, I think there's nothing to be in disgrace. The point is that people from different culture sometimes may have different manners as you were absolutely born there, and you are accepting all of the culture and in study there. you just think you are the best one, lol..

I couldn't comment on it as the result of "The Singaporean Chinese tend to make fun of the Chinese accent from China (although that's exactly how Mandarin should sound like) as it sounds different from our accent." Regarding this phenomenon I think that it does exist everywhere. People are always making fun of those rookies when they trying to say some unnormal dialect of the local, even if it sounds good or close to, but when the fishes get involved in from the local then the result would probably become to another condition, they are acceptable at last.

我想我们改变不了历史和文化,不过我们可以通过自己的努力去学,what is the most important depends on our efforts, right?

I have no idea when you will graduate from university. I miss campus life so much

By the way, I am not studying in a university. I am in Singapore Polytechnic's Bioengineering, if I graduate, I will get a diploma. It's a tertiary education before university.
