street-fashion shots.
post your favorites, the ones that inspire you, the ones that scare you, the ones you aspire to emulate etc.
let's try and keep the commentary to a minimal and reserve this one for lots of pictures! (comments on fits are perfectly acceptable, but long winded conversation should be taken elsewhere)

It's Chris Cornell from Audioslave. Also, perhaps I didn't put the best array of pictures together, but it was meant to be sarcastic. My style is just normal. I look at the pictures already here and it looks like people just trying to be over the top for the sake of standing out. There's no reason for a guy to be wearing a checkered shirt with a plaid shirt over and a plaid jacket. Opinions belong to the person that has them and that this is mine. I know you'll disagree but it really doesn't matter.

Those are just a few pic's that inspire me with the way i dress. I'm sorry i prefer a dress shirt and tie or jeans and a t-shirt as rather than 14 layers of different clothing with my pants tucked into my socks just for the sake of doing it.

And in relation to the Asian comment; what's your point?

Catchforusthefoxes

It's a concept. Very few people dress that way, very many people are inspired by it.

It's like an outfit on a runway. Very few people actually wear the outfits as presented on the runway, but many are inspired by the general concept behind it.

The whole point of The Sartorialist and other streetwear photoblogs and discussion threads is to post concepts like that that stand out. I don't think anyone would be paying attention if all the fits were "a dress shirt and tie or jeans and a t-shirt".

And now back to pics. Sorry.

I understand what you mean. Everyone finds inspiration from different sources and that's what makes fashion interesting. My post was meant to be sarcastic and if that didn't come off then I apologize. I love clothes that stand out but not when someone is trying to do so on purpose, do you know what I mean? Over at my University there is pretty much an exact clone of all the pic's that have been posted in this thread and I find that disappointing. Inspiration is one thing but when you just mimic what you see everyone else doing it loses the effect.

If it's cold outside go ahead and throw on 7 layers, as long as you're warm. However, if it's 25 degrees outside, there's no reason for wearing a scarf aside from wanting to stand out on purpose, and that's something I just don't understand.

I get it, you want to stand out. I don't know how it is in Belgium, but in Canada, standing out is what everyone tries to do, and as a result they all look the same.

Everybody dress and do what you feel like, I'm just expressing my opinion. In that opinion is the belief that this is stylish

The layering look doesn't seem very popular over here, nealry not as much as it is on Styleforum at least. Living in Wisconsin where it's ass freezing half the year, I find it to work well for me, even more as I hate big parkas and need to find another way to stay warm. I don't go as far as wearing two jackets, but I usually wear a shirt/sweater/big cardigan/duffle coat combination.

A lot of posters on sufu seem to try and make exact copies of runway pictures. Very juvenile.

For some reason though, when I look at pictures like this one:

that pic annoyes me when I look at it too long (more than a second).

and especially, very ugly!
seriously it's not cause something has is 'Raf' or 'An D.' that it looks good, half of those designer pieces look retarded for real, like a blind guy designed it...

or even better, like someone designed it and was thinking:
'hey i'll make something totally hideous, then people will wear it just because it has my name on it and i will laugh at their asses'

Actually, I'm not against all that designer brand stuff. A lot of it looks very good imo. Just not all together!
I myself am not of the simple-is-better school at all. My point is that, as mr. Haga wrote, the runway provides hyperstyled images that need to look like that because there is a camera on them, but in daily life the rules of subtlety apply. If you wear an obvious designer garment, I think it's best to tone down on the shoes for example, and not wear a pair of ski shoe things.

The annoying thing about the pic cabl3 posted is that here are two blokes that, by the style of the pieces they wear, pretend they are of the classic simplicity school, but the sheer number of garments proves the opposite.

Tiro
26th February 2009, 12:09
don't get me wrong, I got nothing against designer clothes, it's just, you gotta be a little realistic and not buy stuff just for the sake of it being designer stuff... some stuff looks good, some stuff just does not!
for example those ski boots and the likes just look ridiculous... same goes for tops or pants just looking like drapes or a huge rug thrown overr someone...

Tiro and Cabl3, I see both your point. I am interested in fashion just like I like contemporary art for example. I can appreciate the work though I would probably never wear any of it.
However, when you think about it, wearing ninja costumes is not any more silly than dresing up as a cowboy or a railroad worker, spending $300 on a pair of jeans and $200 on a chambray shirt. My grand father who was a train conductor would have shot himself if he knew how much people pay to look like him.

In the end, there is nor right or wrong to dress and we all look stupid to someone else (although, as noted, most people on SuFu look stupid to me with great consistency. It's remarkable). I find those Flat Head houndstooth shirts just as ugly as any Rick Owens pair of pants, but I can see the appeal of both.

Hey, I'm not defective, I just don't do a lot of mileage on this forum anymore.. I'm on a post strike until someone buys my Common Projects, hah.

Seriously though, as far as recent posts.. Personally, I don't want to look like anyone on the runway- that's just too contrived for the street.. However, I don't see how dressing as if you were from the past is any less juvenile or uninspired than the runway.

What do you guys think? I've found that each forum has a different aesthetic, especially the (relatively) smaller ones, like MyNudies, StyleZeitgeist and StyleForum, and they tend to stick to what they like. I've found SZ more inspiring, personally, though the price points for the items are higher, I've found more philosophical depth to them, and being very much a deconstructionist in terms of fashion, I find it more appealing.

As for SuperFuture, it really does seem like more of a hype thing. Names, particularly, people buying into these names for self gratification. I'll admit, however.. It does feel good, and I have nothing against those who buy simply because they like.

At the end of the day, that really is the definition of style.. You like what you like.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3492/3211869960_c7c2b6c830.jpg?v=0
This guy, I've found, really impresses me. He keeps it masculine, but somewhat just avant-garde enough. It isn't a call for attention, it's just nice.. And above all, different

You all should give SZ a read before you get any premonitions about it. It's really something else. The WAYLT thread is phenomenal.

Now think of this Tiro; while I very much do understand the concept of what is widely and mostly/generally considered as "normal" clothing, I cant help but think that rules of subjectivity can fall into play here. Its the old "what is normal to someone is abnormal to someone else" argument, which applies to itself conversely...

I'm not arguing simply for the sake of defending "Raf and Ann D"... (read above, i'm avoiding a huge quote here)

Of course, there's no denying that if said clothes are not worn tastefully, you kind of look like a douche bag...haha.

1. I understand what you are saying and I can only agree, but what I said was my personal opinion and I don't dislike all designer pieces, it's just some of them are more of a 'style study' to me then a piece of clothing...
kinda like concept cars and normal cars...

2. exactly, lot's of those people on sufu that are buying designer stuff just because of the name end up looking like douchebags in all their pics... but they are buying Raf or whatever, so they've got style and all the other people don't know shit... :-P (some people on sufu however do pull off the designer clothes very well, I have to admit)

3. Raf and Ann D. were just used as examples by me, I'm not targeting those two designers specifically in any way, it's just two names that popped up...

you nailed it mate, I'm not a fan of those houndstooth shirts either btw, that's why I don't exactly go as far as getting railroad worker clothes or cowboy clothes and the likes, the main thing to me is quality jeans and footwear (ok and belts and other leather stuff) and I can fully understand how even this can look totally ridiculous to people not into it...

Aw, Josh, why'd you have to pull that horrid cat outta' the bag?

Anyway, I don't think that buying into an aesthetic is a good thing either, but ****, what else are you gonna' do? Make your own? Does anyone really believe that collecting and wearing items from RW and Samurai and wearing them together is more original and individualistic? Let's admit it- every aesthetic has its archetype. Here we have workers, there, we have..? I think that cutting edge fashion, art nouveau, as one might call it, is more exciting because it's something new and different and, dare I say, not socially accepted yet!

But it is a good idea to keep it legal like Cassius (man in my picture) does.. But then again, why not go wild with it? Shock people for a change. Make them question their definitions and conceptions.

I think this is becoming a bit convoluted. What about street style in general? Should one go out of the way to be an individualist, or put lots of effort into it because somebody's gotta' do it?

PS. The beard man is tacky as paint.

Honestly, you need to relax. It's unfortunate that you have nothing going for you in your personal life that you need to take a sarcastic comment so seriously on an internet forum.
I don't know you at all, so I can't say I have anything against you. You're telling me to grow up, well I say to you get a life.

All this because i posted a picture of Clint Eastwood in this thread. Real mature on your part.

Honestly, you need to relax.

Honestly, you need to stop saying/posting off topic shit. When someone calls you out on it you start whining how it was a joke or it was meant to be sarcastic.

It's unfortunate that you have nothing going for you in your personal life that you need to take a sarcastic comment so seriously on an internet forum.

See what I mean? And this "get a life" comeback is weak.

We're trying to have a discussion in this thread. You've made it clear that you don't like any of the pics/styles posted here. Fine. Either post on topic or don't post. It's been annoying the piss out of me how much irrelevant bullshit gets posted here lately, and this has been an interesting thread so far, I'd like to see it kept that way.

Um Wow ..I never been to Toronto really but I'm surprised little ol' Canada actually has people who have a sense of identity.

The closest thing you have to that are the annoying ass mainstream scene kids who just buy 10$ ultra ultra ultra ultra ultra tight H&M/American Apparel Jeans with an American Apparel V-neck that goes down to their belly button.
Like snap, thats original. Bothers me even more that they walk around the streets/the mall as if they're gods of fashion..I swear it's getting worse than Ed Hardy. I think I see more suffocating-skin-tightjeans+ low low vneck shirt clones than Ed Hardy clones...That's saying something..

My main beef is that these people are clearly trying to break out of stereotypes/look unique, however they're approaching it the wrong way - by copying everyone else and/or a few shots in a magazine. It doesn't even look good... Big bird yellow skin tight jeans ..tight enough that I can see a guy's junk imprint...no thanks..

Well, I see some people are having a hard time grasping the concept of this thread (just like the waywt chat thread)
I started it because there were too many street fashion shots being posted in the celebs thread, it's purpose is to serve as a collection of street style photos. Critique on these looks is fine, but don't use this thread as a means to piss and moan about your city's lack of originality etc. Deal with it. I'm from Calgary, worked at AA, there are enough interesting people and individuals to counter the amount of douche bags. Every city has them, if you're going to let it get to you...you're even worse off then they are. All I'm trying to say is save the whining for another time/thread. Post pictures in here...spare us the bullshit. I'm not trying to be a prick, but this thread has potential to become a pretty cool little collection of style photos.

Thanks.

Thanks.
A forum thread slightly deviating off topic, it'll happen. I'm just discussing what seems to be street culture. What I described is not exactly immediate or obvious but take a stroll on 17th ave or a few malls and you're bond to find the faux-hipsters..like you said. Just what seems to be popular street culture, but its a paradox.. It is what see on the streets here on my daily bus commute and when I go work . But at the same time I see it plastered on celebrities, magazines, etc - not exactly "street" now is it? Call it donkey piss and sexual moaning but sometimes you just make those posts "in the moment" as soon as you read another post.

But I can't find any digital photos I took when I worked at a particular clothing store.
So this will do. Since spring/summer is on the horizon - I've realized many men and women have forgotten the age old accessory. It seems like everyone was wearing these but not so often..but I think if you get the right style, orientate it correctly, it can add that "thing" to any outfit. I'm talking about just a hat. ( though I guess it's gone from a standard working man's accessory to high end fashion. I saw a lot of people wearing vintage styled hats, etc in NYC when I visited family..still not so much here where I live though..I guess that's a calling for me to bust mine out)

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qjpwnPW4c1o/SIaQEN1aMcI/AAAAAAAADv4/1g40EXAsSao/s400/7248panama1web.jpg

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_qjpwnPW4c1o/SIXf3zv7rbI/AAAAAAAADvg/O4n7DZz0qpI/s400/7218Yasin-web.jpg

I would personally rock more hats but with glasses.. (I wear pretty thin framed matte black thin glasses now) I don't think I could pull anything off except caps ..I used to wear thick rim glasses + a yankees cap and that worked with some of my vintage clothes and right amount of facial hair haha..but doesn't look so cool with my modern oakley perscription glasses .. :-(

Its funny actually because flannel here in Australia was often seen as a non fashionable item because it has long been worn by the stereotypically trashy "bogan", and only recently is it being accepted as wearable contemporary/street fashion.

and if those are STFs (which they look like they might be) then I have the jeans. I'm only a couple thrift store shirts away from that style.

BTW, thats a very common street style here in NM.

Don't worry, you could say some Japanese are more American than some Americans.
When I went there..I went to a TGIF restaurant (franchise american casual restaurant). Waitresses dressed up as Uncle Sam...they were hot too...I can't look at Uncle sam on recruitment pictures the same way...ever..

Not to mention the people who hung around in California Burger repro-restaurants.
All dressed up in repro-american cut selvedge denim/etc... Interestingly enough when I started to speak English with my travelling companions, we were soon enough swarmed and interogratted about where we came from and etc.

Likewise, some restaurants...(japanese and regular ones) I could hear comments about gaijins (us in specific) and how "annoying" we are. But I suppose thats in any hot tourist area in the world..

a. Clint Eastwood would have been nothing special to 1830s people
b. Clint Eastwood's style sucks in that pic, looks like he's from 1830

Just come to Calgary in July during stampede. All the girls get the excuses to wear crotch-length denim shorts and cowboy shirts unbuttoned to midlevel and tied up above the belly button with cowboy hats.
(all of courtesy from GQ's current issue...but hey I see a lot of satorialist pics here so ;-)...Yeah I know this isn't exactly street style but I thought I'd mix it up)

This guys style is pretty good but all men's staples..
http://men.style.com/slideshows/mens/standalone/gq/fashion/0309/stylish-mens/00003f.jpg

In that I think if you mixed it up (mens dress attire with modern sets or stylish details) like how he is using the sand-blasted jeans and subtle style details, I think you could rock your gramp's wardrobe.

There's something timelessly cool about blending modern and classic elements of style into one. Elements like slicked back hair, pea-coats, ginghams and hats like pork-pies give a classic, refined and old-school rebellious look to an outfit while things like tighter jeans, vans, closer-cropped haircuts, tattoos and piercings seem to inject a newer edge into the mix.

For me, the most classic example of this kind of whole look has always been skinheads. Because honestly, traditional skinheads are the greatest example of the seamless blend of sussed meets edgy. I'm talking about the original late 60s, skinhead that listened to reggae, cared about his appearance and was still not too far removed from mods and rudeboys. None of this nazi bullsh!t.

Literally, the original street style:

the pict tells :

so i guess it is CM italian unwashed

yea their men's line is called heritage 1981 or something...i thought i remembered seeing ads for that site here, if not SF or somewhere...some of its stuff is decent (like that jacket..but its from last season)
but they also make some really whack stuff.

the women's clothing is better

i thought forever 21 sells only girl stuffs, duh!
might wanna visit the store today.

yeah , here in indonesia you can find those HERITAGE 1981 brand inside the forever 21 store.

1. Cheap Price
2. Nice Stuffs

but too bad, their jeans is just a copycat from many brands. i've seen a pair of jeans which has a KSUBI details (folded seam, the XV stitch near the zipper and side, triple stitch, etc) , and another one that look pretty damn similar to APC NS. came with a pretty stiff material (not selvage though).

but their buttoned shirts and jackets are pretty nice.
