i see many posts in the topic "what are you wearing". so my question: soon is christmas and i'm looking for a new watch. think an automatic-watch is something very special. but there are nice watches with quartz too. for example very cool ones from NIXON (www.nixonnow.com). what are u wearing? what are u lookin for? are here some experts for watches?
thanks guys...

Well, i don't consider myself as a specialist but i do work with watches and know a little about them.

The choice between automatic and quarts is maybe difficult: automatic is more "special" but quartz is more accurate and needs less service.
Nice "inbetween" is Seiko's Kinetic. It's the best of both worlds: an automatic part to create current and a quartz movement to show the right time. Very accurate and no service needed.

I myself like a real "Brand",not a (well-known)fashionbrand that just invents models(like fashion) but a factory that really designs, builds and sells their products.
It all depends what amount of money you want to spend ofcourse.

Where do you work with watches than stiewie??

I got an beautifull Guess watch, and I think it is the best watch in the world when it comes to quality I got it 3 years now and it never had any problems! When I bought it 3 years ago I didn't even know Guess was a clothing brand so I don't see it so.

I am a big fan of Citizen.....not so much for the style but for quality at a low price. I've had my titanium Citizen for 15.5 years now and never had any problems....just change of battery a few times. I hope it never breaks because I won't be able to find spare parts and it has become very sentimental to me now.

I bought a fashion watch once and it only lasted 6 months, then a piece on the face fell off. Now I stay away from fashion brand watches. Seiko and Citizen are two proven good watch brands. Swatch is also good quality.

I got a Poljot Chronograph about 5 years ago, it has a 3133 movement which is the same movement as older rolex models. After wwII the russians were given swiss watch machines to help rebuild their economy. I think mine is a 25 jewel with a simulated saphire crystal face. I've worn it doing construction the last 3 years and only have 1 scratch. It's bullet proof. The only draw back is it's just water resistant. I had a person with a $10,000 IWC watch give me compliments on it... haha... they have 100's of styles and they only make 999 of each style and each are numbered... You can find em on ebay realitively cheap.

Just gotta remind people here that most watches are made by the big four, Swatch alone has something like 23 different brands under it's umberlla.

Nixon watches are great these days, especially since they got their act together and have decent manufacturers now, i still have an old full nelson around somewhere... i dont think they make em anymore, which is a good thing :D

The old fella has a fair amount of watches, but christ his friends (mostly Yanks) have ridiculous collections...we're talking individual watches that are worth houses...

I myself wear one of my old man's cartiers... i'm not really a watch person so i just grabbed something that looked good, and i think he prefered to keep it in the family rather than sell it anyway.

I have a Nixon that no longer works (I've had it at least 6 years, maybe longer), I also wear a Swatch for everyday wear and I have an Oris full steel chronometer, which is built like a tank, and I love it!

Oris watches are really nice, they're all automatic and (for automatic watches) they're really reasonably priced. And you don't really see that many of them around.

Guess makes indeed very nice watches. It's not a real manufacturer but it designes very fashionable models from good quality.
Nowadays the models with wide leather straps(like in the seventies) are in fashion but also the "blink-blink"models with strass.

I myself like Rado a lot. They are made of very hi-tech scratchproof ceramics with a dark high-gloss look.
Like to have one,one day .

ok, i'm a bit further witch the decision...
i think i will take a diesel-watch (don't know exactly what typel). but there are very cool models.

or this one here: (the black one)

it's a automatic diver watch. think it's a timeless (funny word for a watch!!) design. and the quality must be fantastic some experts told me.

bill, you know the nettuno? and yes, i know, the design is from the submariner. but thats not my intention to 'simulate' the rolex. i just like the design. and the price for the quality must be very good as my dealer said. the diesel is quite cool but i think the nettuno i still will wear in 15 years...
now, you could say it's a bit "oldfashioned" because i'm 27. but i don't think so.

I wasn't implying that the Nettuno was a wannebe watch at all, just that it has very classic styling....

My family business is Jewelry, so I've grown up a watch lover. Depending on what you want to spend, check out Fortis watches. They make really nice pilot watches and diving watces for around a thousand dollars. Very classic, very handsome, and good quality

I got a U-BOAT from this drunken dude last week. He was bragging about it, and I just asked him if I could have it: he said yes!!

www.u-boatwatch.nl

It was 415 euros!!!!

The next day he called me and he wanted it back... damn... I gave it back after one day of feeling very rich...

These watches are SOOOOO big. The clockplate was 53 mm!! (just as my wrist :D ) Check them out at their site. It's very exclusive, but very nice...

I'm wearing a gold Seiko Automatic DX (17 Jewels) that I would guess is from the early 70's. It was my grandfather's watch, but he died and gave it to my father, who did the same, and now I'm wearing it. It has my grandfather's initials engraved on the clasp. The watch is very dependable and the styling is lovely. Blue face matches my jeans. I recently got a PIMP "Pimpin' Ain't Easy" LED watch for too much $$$, and I hardly rock that one like I do my Seiko, my everyday companion---like my RR!!!

I just realised i talked about watches but posted none, so here's the new watch i just received from mummy dearest :D back from her holiday, i hadn't worn a watch in ages due to my tank solo's leather strap breaking, so she got me this Evidenza with a steel band, something toned down that suits most all occasions.

can't be all that bad if Bogart is still promoting this from beyond the grave :D

Longines are nice watches, I really like the automatic Conquest. And I absolutely love the Panerai, I think they are such stylish yet understated watches. I'm wearing my Tag Carrera at the moemtn, nice watch, classic face, not the chronograph or twin-time. Also have my Oris full steel chronometer at home but the strap's broken...and my trusty black plastic Swatch with white face and day/date. Does everything a watch should for about ?25!

26th May 2006, 18:39
here in holland you can buy replica's of a lot of panerai's that have a Unitas work and shapphire glass they cost about 200 to 300 euro's but a jeweler coulnt spot the difference

Jeremy
27th May 2006, 02:35
Well for me Watch collecting is kinda of become a new hobby, and i've always felt some...well dirty about owning any kind of replica. I remember there was a big phase of kids with fake louis vuitton bags and wallets and i always just thought... why the bloody hell would you bother?

And i'll be honest in saying without the old fella i would have something like the Panerai.. not that just the watch is ridiculously expensive, but the PAM90 isn't exactly an easy watch to come by my other watches are mostly gifts but i did buy the longies...after my mother haggled the bullshit of the jeweller from where we got it from, i believe i got it for something like 40% off...still one of the biggest purchases aside from cars i've bought.

But the point is i appreciate the workmanship and the art behind timepieces, so replicas for me ruining that appreciation, after all, would we ruin the dry denim experience buy purchasing fake nudies?

I know the hamilton brand by name. it's real american i believe.
I have a book (Taschen) with old ads from the fifties with a few pics in it.

I work in a departmentstore selling and repairing watches. Well-known brands as CK,Seiko,Guess,Esprit,Anne Klein,Boss,Mexx,Festina and Casio are sold by us.
It's ofcourse the low-end of the watchmarket.Prices up to ?500,-

like i said before, i do like real watchbrands like Omega, Cartier, but they are general very expensive and i don't like to spend the money for them.

I own several; two Seiko kinetics(one full titanium 100m. wp, sapphire) and a nice dressmodel of CK. All i got/won from watch-importers. :D

My favourite "like to have"is a Rado ceramics, because of the high scratchresistant material which is made of. Maybe one day....

let's just say it cost me an arm and a leg, more then I can afford to blow on a watch anyhow... (but hey, I figure, this is a once in a lifetime investment)
thing is, I still have to get me an original or atleast a high quality strap for it, that'll have to wait till my funds are stabilized again tho :-|

yeah, told you I didn't do fakes and I couldn't pass up on this one, the price was quite 'reasonable' so I didn't have to get that poljot diver afterall...

Not for me. If I take it off and put it down somewhere, I sometimes forget where I put it. Then, when I start looking for it and can't find it, I start to panic. So, it's easiest to just always wear it.

An alternative for replicas.

If you can't afford a ROLEX daytona.. Check out the Tudor Tiger Prince Date or Tudor Submariner

Its made by rolex and the company is owned by rolex. Its kind of the second brand they carry. The big difference is the movement and the price. Tudor use ETA movements. But in the case of the older Daytonas they used a customized Valjoux 7750. And the tudor has the same movement.

So i a way you buy a Rolex for half the price.. a clean tiger is available from around 1500 dollar

Nice watch!
Though somehow I still don't really like Rolex's. Maybe because they are so mainstream, I dunno.

how old are you, marshal? you wear rolex? wooot??? that's a watch for old folks, like my dad for example.

I kinda have the same thing with rolex, they are nice watches and everything, but they just don't appeal to me when it comes to design, they look too ordinary, too mainstream if you will, for their price anyhow...

I would prefer Breitling, Panerai, Hublot and the likes anyday...

im a big fan of the bell and ross
i dont particularly like rolex's as a cause of them not really having anything special to them other then the name and quality
i just like a little more you know?

I got a Very beautiful, all silver movado watch (Yes...even the face is silver) I dunno if they make em anymore...but if thye do it should be like $500-700 now, or even less than that!

Also got a very nice White diesal watch

I go for fashiony stuff...I mean...quality as well but leaning towards fashion...like...Rolex for example...expensive brand, BUT not great watch...thats the thing... so go for something like...guess or fossil or diesal if you dont want to spend alot, and if your willing to spend, then movado or something, and if you really wanna spend alot....then something like tag heur or something

I don't get breitling though. They use beautifull materials for the case and bracelet. But when it comes to the movement they use cheap ETA movements. Thats ok for a 3000 dollar/euro watch. but when you buy a 15000 breitling you get the same movement. Thats a little bit wrong imo.

Gotto love that Bell and Ross. Looks like it is taken out of a plane straight away.

p.s. i only like the simplest rolex submariner

Breitling ain't the only one doing that though bob, Panerai used to, IWC, etc...
I also don't really get it, Valjoux movements must just be good I guess...

btw, if you buy a €15000 watch, I wouldn't go with Breitling either way...

I like the shape and size of that Bell and Ross, don't like the orange numbers though, shoulda been white or something, dunno...

i know. but breitling is more poplar than anything. Everybody that makes a little money and wants to buy a expensive watch. Buys or a rolex or a breiltling. I just don't get it..

New rolexes don't really appeal to me. I like the vintage ones that are way to expensive. But they are so much more cool than a new one. Do you know the Paul newman daytonas. they go over 120.000 dollar now.

Tiro
22nd June 2008, 20:29
I'm not too big a fan of Ferarri to be honest...
so just like the Bentley Breitlings, it's not my thing...

panerai is quite unknown though over here it seems, only person ever that talked to me about mine was my dentist, he said: 'nice watch, my brother has the same one, about 4k right?'

went to work with it once, actually forgot to take it off, several people asked about it, nobody knew the brand, that is something I quite like about Panerai, it ain't that well known, so people notice it, but don't give it much attention... :-D

Bob, that's obviously a fake one though ain't it? Or a very old one? (I had to look twice though) the crown looks off, the movement is off, plus, the thingy that has to be pulled out the crown protector looks different in shape, the shape of the numbers is off, the 9 shouldn't be there I think (dunno if there are models with the 9 and the little hand there), under the 6 it should say L-swiss-L or T-swiss-T or T swiss T or swiss made instead of just swiss and the glass should have a blue sheen to it...

actually, alot of the more recent luminors have glass backs, that's why also alot of fakes have them...
the older models don't have them though, these things are abit toooo price to afford though, check this site, this is how it's supposed to look:
http://www.paneristi.com/archives/PreA_Panerai/Pre_A_Panerai.html
(looking at this site, there are so many versions that it's quite normal it ain't easy to spot a fake one)

edit: I would kill for one of those 'pre A' Luminors...

edit: that second one on marktplaats is also an easy fake to spot, numbers are off, the letters should be under the six, not to the sides of it, crown shape is off, glass back is off...

I'm getting good at this

The first one is a really old one from the panerai collection. They used to make them with a plastic glass front. Because that was the only way to make them handle the pressure of water.

The second one isnt that far off tiro. Thats a PAM127 fiddy, And that movement is what panerai have used after first using the rolex movements and then the regular ETA movements that you see on the page with the Pre A panerai's. They later changed that ETA movement to a custom panerai movement.that they called the Swans regulator movements. En after that to own manufacture Caliber movements like they use now. One of the watches that has that movement is the PAM249 Radiomir. Actually the replica on marktplaats is very very accurate. Far more accurate than any other replica watch (except for rolex offcourse)

Check this

actually, bob, that replica on marktplaats is still easy to spot to me, furthermore, it says 2002 special edition, there was no special edition of the fiddy in 2002... ;-) (check the panerai site)
I've seen more accurate replica's of the luminor though, higher priced too though... (up to €450 with real safire glass and everything)
it's true though, panerai replica's seem to be more accurate then most breitling etc. replica's...

one day I would like to get one of those black case radiomirs or a luminor 1950 8 days chrono in black, for the time being I'll have to be happy with what I have though...

about the movements, I thought after the normal ETA (valjoux) movements, they started using customized valjoux movements (not panerai) with the swan regulator...

First of all this is a replica watch. So if you hate replica watches please keep nasty comments to yourself. I post this because i've love collecting them. And This is by far the best replica i've ever come across.

Panerai Marina Militare PAM217 Destro

Normally panerai replica watches are way off from the original watches. Those watches have the panerai design but use a cheap automatic movement. They use cheap materials and most of the details are not correct.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/Bobbejaan1000/DSCF2211.jpg

With this Panerai replica i have some cool features that the original also has.

Like
- ETA Movement which means you can take a wheel from an original panerai and place it in this one, Its manual wound just like the real thing. The movement is done with all panerai engravings.
- Sandwich dial, they usually have a flat dial
- Left Hook, This means you have to wear it on the right wrist. Like the original
- Round glass, Like the 1950 panerai this replica has a kind of spherical glass on top.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/Bobbejaan1000/DSCF2201-1.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/Bobbejaan1000/DSCF2197.jpg

Positive points
For 1/100 of the original price
Looks good
Nice quality for a replica

Negative points
Its fake
Scratches more easily
Has only 50 hour gangreserve
Original Marina militare has a swans neck regulator but these can also be bought replica. Older panerai watches have this normal ETA movement
