And yes, back to topic. I'm a bit afraid the quality isn't that good anymore, at least the finish isn't really perfect anymore. I've exchanged my 9011's for another pair because of their bad finish, the new ones got a loose insole (the backpart) besides some small scratches and glue stains. Not a big thing and of course easy to handle, but nothing you would expect from a boot for € 269,-- (regular price in germany). And I can't remember things like this from my 875's or 9014's. :-|

looking way smaller then my 1st pair (+0.5) but good from 1st overall view, nothing conspicuous to see

oiling the welt first and breaking them in a bit today.
getting their first oil-session this evening before i go to bed so that the boots can soak up the oil, they need, over night.

hopefully not having any probs with these in their first month except of breaking them in :-) !...

I'd like a pair of GT's certainly, I haven't worn boots on the regular since the mid-90's probably. I can't say I'd ever see myself not wearing sneakers though. Definitely not clunky skate shoes anymore, but the look and feel of a classic tennis shoe can't be beat.

I have to agree with lemmy here, since I got my ultimate indies, it has become very clear that RW's are nice workboots, but the real quality stuff is def. something else...

I'm eyeing a second pair of indies, regular ones this time, need to put on a half commando sole tho.

i dunno about that one, i'm still wearing colourful canvas at a rate of 3:1 to boots (just got a big boxful in the mail :-D), but i sorta see your point when i look at some of the newer sneakers that are on the market. even if i were ten years younger i'd never see myself wearing silly shit like dunks. i'm not sure if it's just that some things are classics or whether i just got a fixed opinion on these things when i was younger and am still holding on to that, and just working variations on the same theme.

same goes for boots too, i suppose- i've always preferred the workboot style over the formal or 'office casual' styles, and that's reflected in pretty much everything i've owned over the years. i don't see that changing much either as i get (even) older, either in boots or sneakers.

Did you wear thick socks? I used to get blisters on the back of my heels from my Red Wings, but when I started wearing thick wool socks, the problem was solved... I do use some sport tape on the back of my heels, when I know that I'm gonna be doing a lot of miles in one day

beautiful_FrEaK
14th December 2009, 15:35
So I tried on my first pairs of RedWings today. I'm a size 9,5 in Chucks.
I tried the 9111 and the 2971. First the 2971 in size 9. I was able to fit them but they were very uncomfortable. Size 9,5 was still very snug/perfect at the toes and the rest except the heel. It was a little too loose in that area. The same goes for the 9111. So that little "problem" could be solved with an insole I guess?!
Or should I go for size 9?

The guy at the shop was very nice but he confused my Samurai with ordinary Levi's ;-) (ok...I didn't except any other)

Can't speak for the 2971 cuz' they're high boots, but for me the 875's, 9011's and 9014's are an EU 42/ US 9, while my regula size is EU 43/ US 10. I've made the same experiences like you with an 42.5, but I couldn't live with the slipping heel, even a thick insole didn't really help. It's better if they're a bit too tight in the beginning and to stretch them out while wearing (Hehe, we know that pain from our tighter denims, right ;-) ?) imo...Btw (even if you wasn't asking), both pairs aren't my cup of tea...

i want to get my rw956 resoled. do you guys think they´d look better with a gt style sole or with an iron ranger one?
i´m leaning towards the gt one, btw.

this is how they look like now:
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s94/Atze747/rw9562.jpg
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s94/Atze747/rw9563.jpg
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s94/Atze747/rw9566.jpg

the actual sole is quite stiff and hard (feel a bit like plastic) and slippery on wet grounds, that´s why i want a new one.

the gt sole is dope imo. And would look great on those, Atzec.

@House: the shop doesn't cary much more styles and I just stepped by to make sure which size I would need. They only had the 9016 and IIRC 9014 (if those even exist) besides the ones I mentioned. But those two looked too "dressy" for my liking. I already have one pair of "dress boots".
The 9111 therefore is very similar to the 875, or am I wrong? Except the seam on the "toe box" of course, which I'm not a big fan of right now.
Colorwise the 9111 and 2971 were lighter than I saw on pics

Guess I have to try them on again. But some space in shoes/boots is necessary IMO.

Yeah, the right one of my 9011's is a tad smaller than my 9014...:-P As said before, one size down works perfect on my 875's, 9011's and 9014's (and even on the tried on 1911's). If you use a real thick insole and real thick worker socks you might get happy with a half size down, but keep in mind that shoes will stretch while wearing.

davety
16th December 2009, 09:41
mine have stretched post-oiling, but still not really enough to fit a decent sized innersole w/ worksocks. i'd have been best off sizing down 1/2 or even tts, but they're fine to wear with just socks now.

typically you need to size down on red wings. i sized down 0.5 from my usual size. i am a 10. i went 9.5D on my 875. i wear 10 in most of my vans shoes any other sneakers. just to give u an idea.

some are legit on ebay, but be aware of fake products.

thx a lot offyatree

@aztec

if i'm asking about sizing is an mistake

forgive me

because every model has a different size

is there any policy of questioning about sizing???

Atzec
16th December 2009, 15:54
^there´s no policy, but most sizing questions have been answered before. and if you want to ask about a certain model (cause as you say every model has a different size), you should specify the one you want to know about annd not just generally ask for "red wings".

update on my re-soling project:
Redwing.de-guys weren´t very positive about my idea, so i contacted ridersroom and they said, that it shouldn´t be a problem.
i´ll send them the shoes by the beginning of next year, then their cobbler will have a look at them and give me a call about what´s doable etc.

I know the reason for white soles is when RW started making work boots, safety boots. And the white sole is to indicate to the workers that their boots are clean before they step into their houses.
For calling them 'Crepe soles', not sure why, is it because of its crinkled texture and creamy white colour?

both would age nicely I guess. the 2971 leather is a bit more distressed. the pictures from onlyredwing.com don't show the right model. the 2983 is te "Oro"-leather or a kind of that one.

how often did you send your pair back?
and if Rafael does it, it'll be the second time. so for him it would be 1/3 of the pair he wanted is fine. that would make 2/3 pairs bad in quality (spoken for him alone)

I don't think that rw can hold up their quality with every pair they r making. Stefan send his 9011 some like 4 times back but just 2 times cuz they weren't ok and the other 2 times he they shipped the wrong size i think...

To my 9011:

1st pair was a pair of 1911, but they were older and the leather were bleached out. UV-effect, they were from a decoration. Just cosmetics, but I don't liked it.

2nd pair weren't well finished, also just a cosmetic problem, but I don't liked it again ;-)

3rd pair was in return for pair #2, delievered in the wrong size.

4th pair is perfect :p.

You can't compare this to this vital problem with your 9014's. My 9014's are nearly one year old and they still look brandnew overall.

Shitting it up just a little bit more.

Isn't that the main reason for a board like myNudies? Asking questions?

Asking questions, ok. But not the same question or the same type of question over and over again.

What do you expect from this thread? New RW purchases everyday and the usual answers from Tiro?
It's also boring to read through pages if Durrty Boy is a thief/ murdered/ hijacked from aliens or stuff like that.

No Mr.HaGa, I don't agree with you.

What do Tiro and the Ooe thread have to do with this? You seem to have quite the chip on your shoulder when comes to anything I say. Or anything Tiro says. Pretty quick to take offense from either one of us.

Nothing personal, Dr. House, I just call them like I see them.

They don't look too worn. They look like they have half life left. But anyways I think GT would look nice and the material is fair/good on slippery surfaces. Why not get some Vibram? soles? Hear they're excellent for traction.
i want to get my rw956 resoled. do you guys think they´d look better with a gt style sole or with an iron ranger one?
i´m leaning towards the gt one, btw.

this is how they look like now:
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s94/Atze747/rw9562.jpg
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s94/Atze747/rw9563.jpg
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s94/Atze747/rw9566.jpg

the actual sole is quite stiff and hard (feel a bit like plastic) and slippery on wet grounds, that´s why i want a new one.

Atzec

If it's that boring, why do you read it and, more than this, reply to it?

That has nothing to do with you, seriously. Try and read my posts, dunno what you mean.

If we don't allow boring questions, if we're unfriendly to newbies and if we fight against threads we don't like the board should better be closed imo. Or the usual suspects should communicate via PM, found their own board or stay quiet on boring posts.

Tbh, I like the idea of an open and growing board for all, friendly and informative. Basics of web 2.0. The hardcore specialists should feel honored to help Newbies instead of acting arrogant.

Yeah, and nothing personal Mr.HaGa.

denimjunkie
21st December 2009, 18:36
^It is made of a quite hard rubber actually. Makes it last longer?
Makes a cloppery sound when walking on for instance parquet.
Just noticed now when in stockholm that its not the best snowshoe, though.
(no pattern). So here I am slipping around.

I recently got my vintage chippewas also. Soooo nice! I had to glue the outsole on them.
Which is very very similar to my IRs outsole.

how are your boots doing on the snow-ice, guys?
I'm not wearing my RW cause the waffle sole doesn't grip at all on the ice. I wish I had a GTs sole now.

They're not as comfy and good-looking as the RW though...

Same here with my 875's, I don't like them on ice and snow. The GT's are a bit too cold for real winter, so I'm wearing my oldest Marc Boots (they were dirty cheap many years ago, but they're looking pretty cool and they're still going strong), today it's raining like hell and I'm wearing my super warm Josef Seibel Boots.
