This repro is really nice.
But anyway, I think rob's boots look definitely like RW Iron Rangers. Take a look at the seams, the hooks and eyelets- they're all the same compared to the pics at cultizm. At least I don't wanna make a big thing about that. Personally I've got an eye on Iron Rangers or the 9014 Black Chromexcel as my next pair. I asked sometimes before but didn't get an answer- are those boots oversized as my 875's?

I don't like them. RW like the 875 and the GT are popular because of their heritage/vintage workwear appeal. The WORX don't have that. They're just technical, made in China workboots... From what I've seen of them anyways.

Dr. Martens played out? :-?

31st March 2009, 21:52
yeh, way. sorry.
let me expound on that...
doc's are played out. when they got so far away from the original boot and started to created all of these ridiculous shoes/sandals they totally lost the point. the boot was part of a specific brit uniform, namely late seventies rock and the beginning of punk. by the time it became popular in the mid nineties you could already see it's decline. i've heard they're coming back in style, but i just think they're clunky and ugly. some are definitely able to pull it off, especially something as sharp as the 14hole and up boots.
meh, to each his own.

I can buy that. When i hear docs i definetly think of the 10 eye or better tradional boot. Though i dont own any and probably wouldnt purchase any, dont they have a certain iconic status based on there origins? They have such historical importance I hate to see them relegated to "played out status". I get ur point though

yeh, the 10 eye and higher still have that iconic status. i think if they're worn properly they still maintain their importance. if i could pull off the pete townshend union suit/dr. marten combo i'd wear it every day!
to clarify, it's more of the 'dr. marten' name that's played out. i really think they should have stuck to the basics. then again, i feel if most companies stuck to their original formula they wouldn't be suffering.

Hello guys, I need some advice about the sizing on Red Wing 1907: I tried a pair of 875s (I believe they fit the same as 1907s with different leather) in US 9D which is snug but okay width-wise and with a 2 cm slack in length (my big toe ends under the upper stitches approx.).
Does this fit seems okay to you or should I look for a more fitted size, e.g. 8.5D or 8.5E? Can't seem to find E width in Europe by the way...

I've got no experiences with them, personally I like the suede iron rangers or 8112 (oro-iginal) a bit more. But I've checked my red wing catalogue about some details:
Heritage Work Collection Iron Ranger 8111
Leather: Amber Harness
sole: Nitrile Cork
construction: Goodyear Welt
last no.: 8
product care: Leather Cleaner, Boot Oil
The last point is important- if u choose a pair, use Boot Oil NOT Mink Oil (my thanks & respect to 58panheadfan for his fantastic bootcare "lessons"!). Nice boots anyway.

Question guys:
Would you say the Gentlemens Traveler 9014 is acceptable with dress trousers? I ask because I need a pair of boots that can withstand quite a bit of punishment while being worn with business attire?
Im sure Trickers or Indys would fit the bill however they are a bit out of price range right now
Mr HaGa

Depending on what you understand as "quite a bit of punishment" I'd say desert boots would be good for doubling as a workboot and casual/dressboot...

I manage a restaurant so at times I have to double as manager/cook/dishwasher/anything. Most days I spend walking around the dining room speaking with guests but sometimes I have to pick up the slack in the kitchen. 10+ hrs in constant movement plus wet floors tend to wear shoes out rather quickly.

I use insoles in my 875's and my GT's same as in all of my shoes. Dunno which brand, but they're made of real leather and got a "footbed" (right term?). Yeah, and they fit better with an insole, at least it's a lot more hygienic.

have to check out the trialmasters, but 800 is way too much for a sneaker. - the belstaff's are real leather, but yeah they're the sole is gonna wear out over time.
The redwing chelseas - read that redwings fit big, but a slip-on boot, should i go normal size 42 or up to 42,5 which i think is wise.
Separately am interested in classic cydwoq classic shoe, but very expensive.

I agree, RW's don't need shoe-trees, I have to get some trees for my Indies tho, €57 ain't that bad for shoe-trees I think
I don't use any trees in sneakers or work boots, there's no need for that imo.

Hi, long time lurker, first time poster.
I recently bought a pair of Red Wings 875 and they didn't come with removable inserts. Just plain hard leather underneath my feet and they are quite uncomfortable? Are you supposed to buy "after-market" insoles to wear with the boots, or are you supposed to just wear them as is?

You can use a bigger insole for compensating size (or to make them warmer. I use a lambswool insole in my 875's, works great). Or you can use a very thin insole just to protect socks and shoes. Anyway I think an insole is better and at least a lot more hygienic.

Hi Guys:
Just receive my 9014 today and would like to share with those who may have interest in purchasing it.
I wear 7D in my 875. Don't have 9014 to try on in where I live so I decide to stick with 7D. The toe section is much tighter with 9014 compare to my 875, but I guess this has something to do with the toe design as 875 has much more room at the toe section due to the shape of the toe.
Beside 9014 has much stiffer leather which I believe would be much softer after brake in. But I am happy that I did stick with 7D as I think there maybe too much room if I went with 7.5D or 8D as I don't use insole with my Red Wing.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3573/3662423057_a386bfdb05.jpg?v=0
With a bit help from the boot brush, the dust was pretty easy to remove. Left boot is after brushed, right one is still cover with some dust. Can't really see the difference from the photo.

Fine a bit of minor scratch on the inner toe of left boot, but doesn't bother me much as they are almost invisible without a close look and ready to break them in so I guess there will be more scratch to build on when time goes by.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3372/3662426669_28113283cd.jpg?v=0
Here's a shoot of my 875, I have my back panel oiled with LEATHER OIL when I first get my 875, the color turn a bit darker after it's oiled...as the boots were still brand new at the time so I thought I will leave the rest to oil after few months wear, but since I rarely use my 875 so I still haven't get a chance to oil my whole boots.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2605/3663230296_3cf0d76248.jpg?v=0
It's a bit hard to see the major difference from the photo, but the color did turn out a bit darker....just for you to know. But I guess the darker color should give the boot a lots more vintage look, however I am pretty happy with how my 875 look now and guess it still doesn't need to be oiled yet.
At the time of purchasing 9014, I had quite a bit of straggling to choose between 9011 and 9014. But I am very happy that I did go for 9014 as I am always wanting to have a military look boots and I guess black just works better then cherry in this case. But won't mind to have both if I get enough money.
I also did a bit of research on how they will look in total outfit and thought by posting those photos may help some of you that had same straggling as I did when choosing between 9011 and 9014.
I got my 9014 on eBay from "saintsdb9REDWING". Great customer service and I think he may be able to get most of the style from Red Wing so for any of you that are interested in getting a pair you may want to check out eBay.

Sorry, just get the image issue fixed!
By the way, I finally get a chance t break the 9014 today. Went to a mall by walk and total approx. 2hrs with 9014 on walk. To be honestly, my feet is quite tired after that. Especially, back of my lower leg where the top of the boots touch the leg.....I wear a standard sox, but I guess it isn't thick enough so I have broken skin due to the friction between the boot and my leg. Lucky I have long sox on today so I fold it into half to prevent the friction.
The toe section start really stiff....well, I should say the whole shoes, but surprisly by the end of the day, the toe section isn't something that bother me anymore compare to the friction btween the top of the boots and my lower leg. Howerver, I think the leather on the toe section should become softer after few more wears!!
Anyone has any suggestion of how I should wear the boot to prevent the friction between the boots and the leg.....as previously I have the same problem with my Timberland. Should I wear them tight so there's no room for friction? Don't wana wear tick sox during the warm weather!
Thanks!!

Redwing lies in Minneota.
Minnesota is the state with the highest concentration of Swedish ancestry.
Between 1846 and 1930 1.3 million (about 20%) of the Swedish population left the country. I just thought it might interest someone.

i think zonk shop only ships to the us, so it's not real good for the rest of us. they do have a distributor here in australia, but i don't think they carry much beyond the basic workboots- none of this fancypants iron ranger or gentleman traveller business for us, although they do do free shipping for us aussies. and dj, i don't think that the swedes had all that much of a cultural impact compared to the irish exodus in general, and if you wanna argue demographics, there were always far more germans and irish in minnesota than there were swedes, even if you do count the norwegians. that and the fact that the swedes never really had any real indigenous culture to export in the first place ;-) oh, except for the dysfunctional welfare state you gave us in the seventies

Hey guys! I'm in the market for a pair of Red Wings, probably the 875 or 8131 from cultizm. But their size chart confuses me a bit. A US9 equals a E42, which is my normal size in say Vans authentic, but the US8 is only EU40.5 and the US8.5 being EU41.5. What size to rock ? Thinking -1.5 might be too small. But then again, it's downsizing one if you look at it from a US size point of view. Help!

I just thought I'd throw in my two cents about RedWings, though it's a bit of a tangent.
I bought a pair of RedWing boots in June of 2005. They were not very fashionable (well I suppose they could be, but not really my style), and were heavy from the steel-toe and the steel shank through the sole, but it didn't matter as they were climbing boots for a job that i had just started: working as a lineman for the telephone company.
http://www.redwingshoes.com/images/boots/large/2221.jpg
Looking through the website, I believe those to be the boots that I settled on. Anyway, for those who don't know much about what a lineman does, the part most relevant to this topic is the occupational requirement to climb utility poles with climbing gaffs:
http://www.bouttetree.com/images/5.1.3lg.jpg
You can understand just how tough eight hours a day of climbing and descending would be on boots.
Then came Hurricane Katrina, where my work schedule was 84 hours one week, 70 the next...for 2.5 years. My RedWings lasted through both that, AND another 6 months of regular 40 hour schedules. Absolutely the most I've ever got for my money from ANY pair of shoes/boots/etc. So if anyone out there is on the fence because of the higher than average price of RedWings, just know that you will get your money's worth.

i just got my 9011, having taken the advice that i should size down one on my regular size- i.e. from a uk9 to a uk8 with these. while the foot feels fine, i'm having quite a bit of trouble with the opening at the top of the boot, which is way too tight, making them hard to get on and off, and cutting into my calves when i walk.
nothing serious, they still fit serviceably well, and should break to fit better, but given the time over i would have only dropped half a size at most, or even gone true to size, and if there were any significant gap in the shoe i would've just plugged it up with a thicker inner-sole.
to be honest, i think that a lot of the talk on oversizing here is a bit ott, the sizing is not so dissimilar to normal work boots.

^ Remember, they will stretch while wearing like a good pair of denim , so sooner or later they fit you like a glove. If they are too tight at the top opening, leave the last two holes open. And btw, wearing a good insole with RWs is always good advice...;-)
davety
15th September 2009, 11:23
i'm not so sure i have room for an inner-sole, to be honest- there's not a lot of surplus room
but i haven't dismissed these yet, clearly, and i've only just started in, so we should probably wait before taking my advice on these too literally ;-)
thanks for the reassurance, dr house ;-)

Thanks for all the advice guys! A shop here in Malmö, Sweden, actually started selling Red Wings like a week ago, so I tried on the US8, which said 41 in the actual shoe. They felt nice so I ordered the US8 from cultizm, even though the page said 40.5. I'll hope they fit! If they don't, anyone got experience with sending back and so on to cultizm ?
davety
17th September 2009, 11:18
they should do, if it's the same size you tried on in the store...
on a similar note, redwing australia (redwing.com.au) offers a 'fax-a-foot' service, whereby you send in a fax of your own foot and they figure out what size would suit you best. they also do free shipping in australia- unfortunately, they only really deal in workboots and motorcycling and cowboy boots, so none of the fancier lines- redwing has a pretty enormous range...
hooray for malmo too, by the way- i used to live there ;-)

They arrived yesterday and they fit! They're a tad narrow, but I guess they'll stretch. Really loving the colour, it's a lot nicer than any picture I've seen.

-maybe cheapest, part of Hobson & Bates Shoes, little slow (took couple weeks to get shoes, shipped from France [?]) and first impression is a bit fishy, but it works.

The only comparison i can make is with your chucks size since i don't own any of the others.
To me the rule applies chucks size = Red Wing size.

@sambal:
I have 2 red wings bought from store in Singapore, and everytime I buy them, they will check on my feet size quite extensively, to match the models I want.
I suggest buying from stores rather then online, however if u really need to, better check red wing official for information of ur model first then, buy from sites like Zappo http://www.zappos.com/red-wing
I nvr buy from them, but I heard they provide free shipping and full refund if it doesn't fit u.
