rather to much than too less. a thumb, it should be. especially in the moc toes.
the round toes have another shape than the moc toes. the toebox is longer.

Hey guys, I'm planning to buy some Red Wing 8131 boots soon. I wear an 11.5 in Vans, which is pretty much true-to-fit. Should I size down by half or a whole size?
Red Wing boots are incredibly popular in Japan too, it seems like at least 30% of young guys here in Morioka wear them.
Max Power
29th March 2011, 14:06
^hard to say, I size down 1 whole size from vans, others only 1/2. I think the major part is the last.
hippopatamus
29th March 2011, 15:36
i gone 1 size down too...it will pinch ur feet a bit for the 1st wear but dont be afraid it will stretch a lot till comfortness after a few wear . i wear 10.5 on vans and 9.5 for RW
lois
29th March 2011, 15:59
depends on you, if you want to wear it with another insole 1/2 size otherwise 1 size. i have 12 in vans and 11 1/2 with e´xtra insole in rw.

^ These boots seem to be "padded" at the top part, around the ancles, and the eyelids for the laces are off too. Maybe RW made something like this at some point, I don't know, but they are definitly not regular 875s. Might be knock offs a la Wolverine etc. I don't think that these are RWs
Jaypee
1st April 2011, 11:56
^Yeah, I examined the picture moro thoroughly, and it seems there's no signature triple-stiching on the boots nor is the sole your standard red wing crepe. Cool boots tho.

hey all, just got my redwing rangers. awesome boots. i ended up going for the 8.5, and im normally a 9 in con's, and this is where its a bit dubious. i got a inner sole, and wearing normal thin socks, and i find that they still rub a bit on the heel.
im thinking about sending these back for a size 8. the only other thing i can think of is to go for some thick socks....?
help and advice appreciated.

thick socks are way to go IMO. makes it a lot more comfortable
Max Power
5th April 2011, 08:34
The Red Wing socks are really comfy and nice, but just too warm now. I can wear my Red Wings with all kinds of socks and they still feel comfy, burlington wool may be a compromise between thick and thin.
Rotbart
5th April 2011, 11:12
I own tonns of socks (around 60 pairs?) and prefer caterpillar socks in red wings. Cheap, comfy and no steaming and smelly feet! Half way between thick and thin IMO and still wearable in summer. Available in black, navy and grey ...

The boots are awesome! Only thing I don't like is how hard it is to take them on and off. Does this get easier as they're broken in?
Jaypee
15th April 2011, 12:03
^It does get easier - what I do is I always undo the laces from the top holes and then loosen the laces all around. Then my foot just snaps into place and tying them again is no biggie for me.

X-Post. need some opinions (fast):-P
as I suggest in x-post: go with brown - more rewarding colour in the long run - will show wear&tear, develop patina, and you can always tone the colour down with coloured shoe polish...
Max Power
13th May 2011, 12:58
thanks. Best thing will be, I'll try them on and see how it works. ATM, I'm leaning towards the black ones, as I already got the 877 and 8112 in brown.

I ordered some size 10 8131s - I absolutely love the Oro Russet Porridge color and would have gotten my first pair in this color if I'd known that I should have sized down one more. My 8138s are just a bit too big on me, so I'll probably save them for heavy-duty/dirty activity and wear the 8112 and 8131 for everyday life.
I'm loving my Iron Rangers. The only thing that bothers me is how the heel inside the shoe has a separate leather overlay on top of the main sole, instead of one continuous piece of leather like on the moc toe boots. It looks kind of cheesy; I assume it's done this way because the construction attaching the sole is different on this boot?

You're not the only one - I love well-loved and well-maintained boots, but I hate deliberately-abused or just dirty boots. Dirty boots are all very fine when you're young, but things become different when you're over 30 ;-). Anyway my motto is; boots that I wear "daily" should be clean - not dirty or abused.

Hello All, so this is my first post on the mynudies forum and I made an account to share my love of nudies and red wings. Now back to the topic, I'm looking to buy the iron range 6'' in the brown color. Buying won't be an issue because we have a redwing retail store in town. (I live in minnesota, same state where they're manufactured). Can anyone post pics of what they look like after they're "broken in".I need a good pair of boots to go with my slim fitting pants before fall\winter.thanks

Hi guys, just a quick question regarding insoles. I have two pairs of RedWings: GT and Moc Beckmans. Both are size 8us. What's the rule here, do you need insoles since both come with none? I grabbed the insoles of my tennis shoes (very comfy) they fit nice in the Moc Beckmans but not at all on the GT! The GTs fit me perfectly without insoles and the Mocs are very roomy. I sweat a lot and my boots get 'wet' basically. So I thought maybe with insoles that would help. But alas the GTs will definetly NOT take insoles (even thin ones). It basically feels like I am choking my foot :) <<<<I'm asking because I had a pair of Dr. Martens *made in England* and they only had the back heel part of the insole (just like the red wing) but the rest (after years of use started to like 'peel' off like when you get a piece of cardboard and rub it with your hand)-so I assume it was hard-press cardboard??? (Pretty sure redwing is leather right????)
Concret
12th July 2011, 22:37
^Do not worry dude, i had the same issue with a pair of RW Chelsea, it was no room for a insole and my feet were sweating a lot, but the LEATHER inside never broke out (like dr. marteens crap;)).
Try with a thin leather insole and light socks, it might help.

12th July 2011, 23:00
thanks Concret. Will not worry then. Will rock them hard from now on. hahaha. (just another question.) I usually wear different pair of shoes everyday but would like to 'just wear my redwings and give them hell hahaha. Would it be wise to buy one of those 'overnight driers?'. Or should I just rotate??? I kind of understand that rotating is good for your shoes (keeps them smelling clean) and for you your toes...they won't have to put up with the same position all the time :) What's the opinion here????
Concret
12th July 2011, 23:40
I think both ways would be fine, a drier and a good rotation. Humidity is no good either for your shoes and feet...keep it dry!

Howdy all.
I'm frothing on getting a pair of Iron Rangers Hawthorne Muleskinner. I recently went into the shop here in melbourne that old mate working there says is the only retailer in all of Aus.
Anyway, the shop only had a 9.5US (D) in these, which were waaaay too narrow for me. He also told me he doesn't have any 2E width in Iron Rangers.
I'm wondering if anyone has had the same problem with width sizing? I'd be seriously surprised if they hadn't as I've never had a width problem with any other shoe before...
Anyone know how much wider the 2E is than the D??
Cheers!
davety
16th August 2011, 07:39
i don't like your chances on finding anything other than D- i usually take the same size as you in EE (US9.5), but i've found that RW usually stretches out to accommodate, and i have 4 pairs in D- painful at first, but fine in the long run. that said, i don't know your specific circumstances, so you may want to try bakers for the EE size, i know that shoebuy.com used to have a small range of EE but i think they've cut the line completely. Btw you're nuts if you're paying australian retail with the dollar like it is.
ps yes baker does have the EE- check here

i think the sizing is by and large the same across most of the red wing lines, that being deduct 1/2 size from your US size, remembering that in australia we mostly use UK sizing, which is one lower than the US. i think- altho i don't know if this is still the case- that deus ex machina carries some RWs, so they're worth checking out if you need to try on a pair. i came to my sizing with trial and error, but generally US-1/2 or UK+1/2 works fine, especially against a standard size shoe like Puma or Dunlop volleys- don't try and measure against an adidas or converse because their sizing is a little askew.
red wing australia can estimate your size if you fax them an outline of your foot, but you'd be expected to buy through them, i would imagine- probably worth the extra money, but i can assure you that small fits will stretch out to comfortable- my first pair was sized down a full size and were too small, but they fit fine now. it was very painful for a while when breaking in, but trust me- even if you get the right size you're in for at least a month of pain with any RW while breaking them in, and that's a standard observation over 4 pairs. that is the real price of RW ownership, but that said, after the break-in they'll last you for years of comfort.
Cold Summer
22nd August 2011, 08:04
I had to go down 1.5 from my US size to get the right fit on my boots. Normally I wear 11.5 in something like Vans or Onitsuka Tiger, but 10.0 in Red Wings.
The only thing uncomfortable for me is the back ankle part, which tends to really wear my ankle sore especially in my moc toe boots. That may be more the fault of my socks. My Iron Rangers quickly became very comfortable, though.

I bought a pair of factory second 875 from eBay (USA) 5 years ago - they were 49.98USD + 27.80P&P to the UK. They had a couple of minor scratches and a punch-hole on the both tongues (this means they're factory second), otherwise they're OK. I'm quite chuffed with them.

You suppose to use lotion after wash ?
Yes. Since I found a better leather cleaner than any other oils products, I have to use the lotion conditioner to emollient after wet cleaning.
P.S. Thanks Obbi!

Great boots Naoto! Oro Russet is my favorite color for Red Wings, and incidentally the most popular one in Japan.

Cheers, love! Yes, you should wear your engineers more often! ;-)
@Cold Summer
Yes, Oro Russet is my favourite colour, too.
Why don't you go for unusual RW boots only available in Japan while you are there? There are some unique models you could find at ABC Mart or BEAMS.
P.S. I hope the hurricane won't hit the town you live.....

Man, Ika, if you get them 8-inchers, we'll to a hardcore-8"-red-red-wing-duel, 2940 against those moc toes, ok? And this time I won't be gentle because you're a girl.

I've seen RWs at ABC Mart and some other places when I visited Osaka, but I don't recall seeing any unique Japan-only ones. I don't know if they have them in my size (A US 10) anyway since I can't find any other shoes in Japan that fit me. By American standards, my foot size (11.5) is not really that big.
We've gotten some rain the past few days, but other than that things are fine here.

@ThatDamnBeaver
Yes, they're alias "American Classics" in Covent Garden, London. I have been to their shop several times before, but they don't sell RW boots particularly cheap - you might find the same boots cheaper in your town or country, I think.....
ThatDamnBeaver
4th September 2011, 19:48
209 pounds for IRs is pretty cheap i think. Here in sweden they cost atleast 250-270 pounds a pair.

After wet-washing and applying the conditioner, I always give an extra treatment for my engineers.
This is a shoe cream called "Diamant" from Collonil, which gives crystal shine on my boots.
Apply small amount of Diamant (using my fingers) evenly, then brush it like hell.

http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/1063/rw2y.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/855/rw2y.jpg/)
Pros:
Make my boots very shiny like dress boots (just imagine the GT/Beckman boots)
Small scratches on the toes would be less visible
Easy to clean the dirt
Become more waterproof (but I'm not sure - still investigating)
Cons:
If you'd like to keep the original "mat sheen" of your boots, then don't!
Can't be used on suede/nubuck boots.
Diamant is quite smelly
Good luck, good fvck! Bye for now.

^ Looks good! Might have to consider doing this in the winter when water is an issue as well.
Btw (@everyone), stumbled across these (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Red-Wing-8111-Lifestyle-Iron-Ranger-Mens-Boot-sz-8-5-D-/250861587210) in my continuing search for boots. They are legit rangers, right? Quite a bit cheaper than other pairs I've seen...

guys..red wing noob question. The soles of 8875 / 8131 / 875 are supposed to be curved or flat?

There is a bit of a curve to them, well atleast mine do. I looked at the link and iv never seen ones like the middle pic before they are well flat ?

exactly, the one is that is almost flat i've seen so far is the 1907 but not 875 / 8138 / 8875

Naoto Deluxe
17th September 2011, 20:10
The easiest way is to ask the shop that you bought from - they should be able to tell you. Or if you bought your pair from the private sale or the auction, then simply ask www.redwing.com for the nearest workshop.
But brace yourself - having your boots resoled would be quite expensive! Good luck!

Nope, got them from a local RW store. Actually, the first ones I got (which were too small) had the same markings. Weird.

If I were you, I'd bring them back to the shop for exchange. I'd compromise if I bought them from eBay or were on sale or factory-second cheaply, but yours were new from the RW shop, weren't they?
But in the end, it's up to you!

A while ago I saw some Red Wing long wallets (!!) at a store in Osaka. Anybody know what the story is behind these? I'm guessing that Red Wing licensed their name to some Asian maker that actually makes the wallets. I don't see anything about them on RW's Japanese website.
You can see some of them here: http://threewood.jp/SHOP/32369/466133/list.html
In other news, I'm thinking about getting some Beckman 9011s in a few months. In addition to being inherently sexy, the fact that I can wear them casually or with my suit for work is very appealing, and given our harsh, snowy winters in northern Japan, I worry standard dress shoes may not do the job.

I sold my 8138s since they were half a size too big (10.5), but they were my first pair and I sized my other two right so it's all part of the learning experience. Anyway, the 9011s look really sexy but everything I've read says they're incredibly tough to break in!
The other pair I'm considering are the 8130 black moc toes. I have the 8131s and love 'em, but the 8130 look seriously badass!
