you haven't been using turpentine to clean your boots, have you?
i should rephrase my earlier post- just because i haven't noticed doesn't necessarily imply that it hasn't been happening. i oil and polish with a black t-shirt, so for all i know heaps of dye might be coming off ;-)

yeah Stefan, it's pre-treated and oil-tanned. It's not bad I just wanted to know if it's common. Got the 'bott oil' and 'mink oil' today and used the 'boot oil' right away.

still waiting, last time the shoemaker told me that they were on their way, he mixed something u. my boots were not finished, cause he was waiting on the matching heels, as he only had too big and too small ones.
i just called him today and he said, that the heels arrived yesterday, will be applied today and then the boots will be finally shipped on thursday or friday.

if i'm looking for the right rw-measurements can i go with THIS (http://www.red-wing-shoes.de/schuh-groessen-tabelle.htm) red wing measurement chart?
seeling the 204s in US8 so i looked at the measurement chart and there it says 28cm.
So I'm asking if 26cm are ok for a size US8 or if any of you got other measurements for me!

Size RW 9 = 42EU? I wouldnt think so...
I think they just put any chart in there...
dr.house
5th February 2010, 08:43
Best way to get your correct size is the insole size (and the knowledge how long your feet really are). If you know that RW's generally runs 1 size bigger (or a half if you use thick or double socks and/or insoles) it shouldn't be that difficult to get a well fitting pair. And don't mix up US and UK sizes...:-? And I agree, the size chart is just a copy from a standard size chart. Again, RW's runs bigger as said before...
Ah, and RW changed their tagged sizes from earlier models. US 9 is now EU 42 (and was 42.5 in earlier models, if I remember right).

davety

^ 1907- is that the copper rough and tough? while i personally wouldn't go predistressed (i'd rather the 875 and beat them up myself ), if you like them shoebuy has plenty of them- http://www.shoebuy.com/red-wing-classic-lifestyle/248683/532959. I like the 1907 because of the toe being less chunky. Are those chukkas the only RWs you own? I'm wondering how to size the 1907.
davety
6th February 2010, 03:46
i think the 1907, 875 and all the other moc-toes crepes are the same dimensions? i dunno. if you mean the round-toe, they're even cheaper on shoe-buy, but i just assumed the 875 and 1907 were the same boot in a different leather-style. defintiely less chunky than the chukkas tho, if that's what you meant :-D
anyway, i also own the 9011 cherry gentleman traveller and the 8146 briar vibram moc-toe. i usually wear size UK9/US10 in most shoes (nike, vans, puma, etc, for some international comparison), and i sized down 1 full size for the 9011 and a half size for the 8146. -1 fits ok, but not enough room for hardcore insoles and thick socks (a must for my flatfeet, but also breaking-in comfort); -1/2 is a perfect fit with insoles and worksocks. and honestly, you need to think seriously about some decent inners and socks while breaking these in.
so your vans/nike size -0.5 ;-)

I was always wondering why the 9011 and 9014 was cheaper than the other Beckmans at cultizm...
Slowhand
8th February 2010, 10:39
^ Yes, at a lot of other places, all the GTs are equally priced, and seems to be more expensive than IRs and crepe boots... I'm also very glad to have gotten my 9014s when they were still cheap at Cultizm. ;-) 209 dollar IS ridiculously cheap for a pair of RWs, compared to the prices everywere else (in Europe)
davety
8th February 2010, 11:07
^ try getting the 9011 for that price minus 19% VAT, like i did
fair enough, i reckon the beckman series is worth around $300, anyway- a bargain's a bargain, but you can't expect those lower prices to hang around forever, especially since their later beckman stock was priced at 300 as well.

^ yeah they do ship worldwide, sorry- i checked
and i agree on the 875 and 877- those two are quite difficult to track down at most places i've looked at, at least at low prices. that's a great price on the beckmans too by the way, but for most of the others it's much cheaper to go through shoebuy, especially since they're always running discounts, usually around 30% off the same prices as bakers, with shipping around half of bakers' rates (free in the us).

its the number from the last.
the gentleman traveler 9011 has a last no 8 like the iron rangers and the round toe models. this last has a smaller toebox, but are a little bit longer than the moc toe models which have the no 23 last.
the "new" model 1907 has a different last. maybe a new one for the new models. has someone compared this with the old moc toe last ?

It's never been an issue with the leather of my 875s, which can be "rubbed" to look like new again, but the leather of the GTs seem more fragile. i really couldn't give a shit about a couple of scuffs, so i won't be bothering with kiwi- i was only relating my experiences with the featherstone leather. there's plenty of options for the 9014 tho, which was the topic at hand, for those that do worry about some scratches. like i said, it all darkens out anyway, so they're hardly hi-vis.

i was pretty pissed off when my gt scratched itself almost straight away out of the box, because it was highly visible when brand new, but after a little while it all evened out and it's quite subtle now. you can still see it if you look for it, but it's not really immediately noticeable.
i think it's reasonable to be a little concerned about scratches, since they're not cheap shoes by any means, but they're not really that prone to damage. if i had a big-arse scuff that scratched off a stack of surface finish, i'd be pretty anxious, but in my experience most wear is fairly inconspicuous, even if i won't go out of my way to get visible ageing- and that goes for my other RWs too, not just the beckmans. they'll age nicely enough over the years by themselves without me needing to camp it up.

probably not all that different. chinese factory conditions tend to get a bad rep from people who have never worked in factories, but i assure you that conditions in the few factories that are left in the west aren't all that rosy, either. i'd be quite certain that red wing's 'happy factory' videos wouldn't be telling the full story.

The soles are also very much in contact with snow and rain, and I could just imagine bad things happening if it would get completely dry and start cracking... But if it's not necessary, I guess I shouldn't worry
fairylicks
14th February 2010, 00:03

There seems to be a trend that work boots should be
abused and worn in any weather conditions like in rain and
snow
I don't see the trend. Work boots are tough enough to be worn in every condition cause that's the purpose they were made for. On the other side, I think there is the trend to 'baby' them too much.

davety
14th February 2010, 04:12
i think a lot of people seem to have a distorted concept of how people like tradesmen take care of their workboots. every bricklayer or carpenter i've ever known has sworn by regular conditioning and waterproofing, even on much cheaper boots than red wing, and in the australian army at least it's mandatory for boots to be kept condtioned so frequently that the last treatment's shine should always be visible. there's no harm in 'babying' a boot, it's just commonsense to want to protect your boots and get the most life out of them.
lemmy
14th February 2010, 09:44
I know, I know
The fact is that I see more and more brand new super-oiled boots than used ones, here. If you read this thread, one post every three is about how to oil, which oil, where to get it from, when, how much...(I also created a 'oil thread' for the 'oil perverts' to keep this one clean, but it didn't work! lol).
I've been taking care of my boots since I got my first pair of trickers more than 10 years ago and I think I know what I'm talking about. But this oil thing IS a trend and a ****ing boring one too. So, please if you wanna go ahead with the discussion, do it in the dedicated thread! Pleease!

14th February 2010, 09:59
A pleasure to read buddies ;-)
I don't know why ppl make a problem outa this. RW's (for example) got their work boots and their heritage boots. I'm sure their heritage line is made for dicks like me who wear their GT's in usual urban spheres where nothing really bad can happen to their boots :p. And more than this, GT's aren't made for real "hard" working imo. I treat my 875's (which is more or less a "real" workboot) pretty different and wear them on "harder" locations e.g.
RW is calling their Beckmans "Dress Boots", and that's what they are imo. And I think it's a stylish and good way to keep Dress Boots shiny and in a good condition, nevertheless they'll age beautifully like all leather goods do. And if someone also takes more care of his 875's too- okay. Live and let live.

Very cool! I need a pair of those... ;-) Seem more "spring"-like than 875s...
davety
17th February 2010, 06:23
the fit on the chukkas seem almost tts, they're not quite as loose as the 8146 (although my feet may have been swollen from work, because the right felt tighter than the left ). and yes, they are very nice, they fit very comfortably and they're reasonably light, without being lightweight, plus the crepe sole is as comfy as hell, too.
tbh i think these might be my favourites, they've got such a lovely colour already after just a little wear- someone else asked whether they'd been oiled already, but those photos were taken after about 20 minutes worth of wear.
the comfort factor shouldn't be taken as me saying these don't need breaking in, because they do. i find it ironic that every boot seems to have its own particular places where they hurt at first, and since i'm breaking in three pairs of boots at the moment (8146, these and some new boots at work), plus trying to get some wear in on some older ones at the same time, my feet are ripped to shreds all over, with each boot unleashing pain on a different part of my foot

one question regarding the 8146, do they need much breakin and do they have the "hard" insole or the "soft" one ?
you might get a better answer on this one from denimjunkie than from me, mine only arrived 2 weeks ago and because i have to wear special boots at work they haven't gotten a great deal of wear yet- i'm generally either at work or the beach at the moment, so there's not much boot action to be had. i've given them a run about 4-5 times, and they do seem to need some breaking in, especially around the heels, but they're not as bad as the 9011s were.
the vibram sole is harder than the crepe sole, but again a bit more forgiving than the beckmans- the leather is also quite thick and stiff too, compared to the others. as for the innersoles, as far as i can see all my RWs have the same innersole- a moot point for me, since i use thick bata latex inners as well in all three.
the chukkas have been the easiest of the lot thus far, but even they're dishing out the pain- i should probably hold off any further verdict until they've all had their day in the sun :-D
@ dj- re: laces- yeah, i'm not a fan of all these brown and yellow laces either. i'll do something about it i'm sure, just too lazy to do it just yet :-D

@ redwinglover- the 8146 is in plentiful supply at shoebuy.com, and they're very cheap if you use a) 10% membership discount and b) the regular 20% off coupons- they literally run one at least every week without fail. i don't know how much ship would be to germany, but it's only $35 to australia and only takes about 4-5 business days. mine cost less than US $200 all up.

just double-checked, they're the legit one, imo. i'd still rather deal with baker's or shoebuy if i were in canada tho. shoebuy doesn't have the best range, but whatever prices you see are frequently 30% off with coupons, are-kind seem like fairly standard pricing.

I tried on a size 7 and had a good inch or so of room from my toes to the end of the boot, but the boot felt pretty narrow around the toe area. So... I'd probably need a 6.5E? I could probably even fit into a size 6 if i decided on not wearing insoles. Yeah, yeah... I'm a small person with small feet.. Such a hassle to find stuff in my size sometimes!
For your reference, I wear 6 in clarks desert boots, and 7 in vans.

i actually wanted the "real" gt-style sole at first, but we came to the conclusion, that this would be better and more comfortable. i´m glad, that walking in these doesn´t feel like walking on plastic-soles anymore. actually it feels really good now.
Nice work Matthias and nice gifts. Congrats!

It´s "Effekt Ledergel". the owner of ridersroom and the shoemaker seem to be huge fans of it. they also already used it on my boots and they feel amazing.

another question to the chukkas which has been posted some time ago. have they a leather lining ?
m00ba77
22nd February 2010, 09:06
I have a question:
When I've been walking around I've caught a few scrapes/scuffs on my beckmans (curbs, corners of cabinets, gofing around and catching them on something or other).
I oiled them tonight because they looked like they might need it since I've been wearing them and it's been wet/snowy around here. The scuffs/scrapes turned a significantly darker colour. Is this permanent or will this dissipate once the oil soaks in overnight?
Redwinglover
22nd February 2010, 09:45
it will take 2 days before the oil has been dried, after that period you want see a big difference as before. this experience i have made
with my 9111.

my chukkas have no leather lining, if that was a general question about the chukkas. i think those black suede chukkas are a very limited edition, so they may be a little difficult to find...
Redwinglover
22nd February 2010, 11:47
thank you.
for your information: i have spoken with the red wing shop in germany, the chukkas have been updated last year. the "old" one have a leather lining, the new one has none.
so i think the new model is better for the warm spring and summer time. they have the grey one in stock for 189€.

I'm wondering what happens to the soles of the GT's and IR's after the threads are walked away? I've read somewhere that the threads will glue together or something like that, but I can't imagine...can anyone confirm this? Pics of old worn soles?
denimjunkie
23rd February 2010, 13:42
I have it with my chippewas. They just break and then the glue that holds the welt with th outsole starts to let go.
Thats when its time to go to the shoemaker.
dr.house
23rd February 2010, 13:53
You mean when all the threads are walked away they need to be resoled?
denimjunkie
23rd February 2010, 13:58
Well, it depends I think on how worn down the sole is. they might have to be resoled or maybe just resewn.
I did a fast fix. (Reglued the sole)

yep. i'm surprised with these chukkas tho, i can literally only go 5 minutes before they tear up my heels, but besides that they're super-comfy, it's weird. i took out my insoles tonight, the extra room has made it a little easier. my 9011 took about 15 hrs solid walking to break, the 8146 took much less time but was more painful, but they're both fine now.

Dont worry, the only oil I eat is olive oil :-)
(Which is also supposed to be good for the leather)
Atzec
26th February 2010, 13:02
^it´s not. olive oil can make leather rot.
denimjunkie
26th February 2010, 13:14
Fact or assumption? Can you give strength to that statement, Atzec?
Atzec
26th February 2010, 13:27
^i´ve read about it multiple times. (i´ve read stuff about saddle care etc, to learn more about leather care in general).
general consensus was:
olive oil gets rancid over the time, esp. when it´s exposed to sunlight- that´s a fact.
so if you´ll aply it on your leather, the same will happen to the oil and in the will also cause damage to the leather and esp. the threads (most of all: it´ll stink).
IF you want to use olive oil, use it sparingly. it really softens up the leather, because it penetrates the deepest fibres of the leather, so it may cause stretching, as well.
sorry for not having a source no, but that´s what i´ve read and sounds logic to me.
denimjunkie
26th February 2010, 13:31
Yeah, Ive also read that it might turn rancid on you. But why does it do that? I mean animal oil like neatsfoot oil should also turn rancid, right or not?
The boot oil from RW (one of them) is also all natural...
Atzec
26th February 2010, 13:36
^i´m not sure, but i think it has sth to do with the unsaturated fatty acids, that are good for your health, but bad for your leather.
animal oil contains less unsaturated fatty acids, then vegetable oil.
edit:just read up on it- the unsaturated fats are more prone to oxidization, then saturated fats are. that´s why they turn rancid.
dr.house
26th February 2010, 13:51
Sounds to me like you guyz never used boot oil :-D You need one or two DROPS for one boot, believe me. Use a sponge and you can oil the whole boot, it's reall no problem and this quantity won't get rancid cuz' the leather drinks it all :-P.
I oil my GT's twice a year and use a regular neutral shoecream between (and the fat mink oil for the welt).
denimjunkie
26th February 2010, 13:59
