Trying to revive this awesome thread. Some evo pics from my collection.

My favorite: Momotaro 201. Turned cherry red after applying oil. somewhat 8 months between the pics.

What mink oil do you use? Been trying to find some decent quality stuff but I've only found a few cheap ones so I'm a little wary of using them.

Max Power

exactly this one. Compared to the Mustang paste: MP doesn't smell (although the Mink Oil smells good), MP crawls in faster, doesn't darken the leather that much, MP should keep the leather more breathable and MP is easier to apply (heating Mink oil with a hairdryer helps). So, I'd prefer MP, but Mink Oil does everything you can demand from a leather oil.

29th December 2011, 15:00
Ok good good, just ordered that RW mink oil so I'll also have a look for the Mustang Paste to try out! Cheers for all the help Max

Max Power

It's good enough for some people to put it in their breasts, so it should work. Unless it's made in France (sorry, couldn't resist) :-P

Haha!
But in that case the problem actually is when silicone is freed: it's not supposed to directly touch the body.
Well I used to lurk on some general clothing forums, and shoes-geeks weren't very fond of silicone.
Products I use on nice shoes ("saphir" brand) use beeswax + various oils (jojoba, mink...).

Here's pic from my GTDDO's patch.
No special treatment, just belt rubbing.

I have no idea how it will wash in the machine but my next patch is a donated cut to size piece of navy blue alligator - it works for handbags!

shiuym
11th January 2012, 00:50
I heard from some people they do not hot soak denim which has leather patch, instead, they shrink the denim by putting the jeans in warm water for 3 hours, then change the water once and keep the jeans in water for 3 more hours. then just hang dry.

doesn't anyone here had issue before with hot soaking leather patch? or doesn't anyone put their jeans in warm water for 6 hours??? do they shrink? I had experience that put jeans in hot hot hot water for 4 hours but still not shrinking enough.

Max Power
11th January 2012, 09:59
if you use the hottest water from the tab, you won't have problems with the patch to crack or shrink to my experience. But if you wash at 90°C you will.

shiuym
11th January 2012, 10:12
thanks Max Power... so I can put the jeans in hot water from the tab as usual. I was worrying about if I need some special care for my future deer skin patch momo...

Max Power
11th January 2012, 10:28
Oh, especially the momo deerskin patch is extremely robust. You might apply some Mink Oil or Mustang Paste before the soak, let it dry over night and then soak. Boot oil tends to darken the leather much, see my 0201 with it's burgundy coloured patch.

shiuym
11th January 2012, 19:27
Oh. You apply oil before the initial soak? Does anyone here ever try the method that set the denim in 30 C water for 3 hours and repreat one more time. I heard this method is decided for leather patch denim for who doesn't wanna "mess up" the leather patch.

Max Power
12th January 2012, 07:49
That's the safe method, but considering that for example Kayodic washes at 60° at still has no major patch issues after many washes, I think you're playing too safe here and maybe won't get all the shrinkage out of the denim.

Non darkening oil before and after the soak and you're set.

shiuym
12th January 2012, 09:05
true!!! the shrinkage is the biggest consideration for the cold soak method. And I think you are right, the patch shouldn't get mess up this fast.

currently have no experience on it because the only leather patch raw denim i have is sanforized...

Kamikaz
12th January 2012, 10:19
On a side note, unless you put extreme efforts into it, the water is unlikely to stay at 60° for 3 hours.

shiuym
12th January 2012, 20:14
To kamikaz: I do spend time on checking the water temp througout the soaking process. Maybe this is another over-do too? Haha
